The first “low profile” deck was installed in July on a new bridge at the Huffman Historical Park at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. For this project, NCC partnered with the Air Force, engineering consultant Comptek Structural Composites, and panel manufacturer Webcore Technologies. The low profile design is a lower-cost alternative to full-depth FRP decks. It is aimed at a large market segment traditionally served by materials, such as timber and galvanized sheet steel, that wear out relatively quickly due to their susceptibility to decay and corrosion. The low profile deck is five inches deep instead of the eight inch depth traditionally used for concrete decks on larger bridges. There are many low profile decks in Ohio counties. The bridge at WPAFB crosses Hebble Creek and is part of improvements being made at the base to provide for public access to Huffman Prairie for the 2003 Inventing Flight celebration. Four low-profile panels of sandwich construction were installed on steel girders. The four deck panels were brought to the site on the morning of the installation and it took only four hours to install the deck. Concrete sidewalks, railings and asphalt overlay finished the bridge construction.
