With the development of high performance aircraft, the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Materials and Manufacturing Technology Directorate at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio found that composites fit the bill. Composites met the aerospace industry’s need for material that was lightweight, high strength, corrosion resistant, and offered flexibility in design and manufacturing. AFRL set the stage by conducting high tech carbon fiber development research which produced effective applications for aircraft fuselage, wing and other structural components.
The Department of Defense (DoD) and other industries face the challenge of affordable material that delivers high performance. NCC’s ability to develop
lower cost manufacturing techniques have strategically positioned the Center to support these industry needs and build a foundation for potential technical
cross-fertilization.
