GrafTech leadership changes

Lionel Batty has been promoted to the position of President, Graphite Electrodes, GrafTech. He joined the company in 1983 and has worked across many functions, including operations, customer technical service and quality assurance in both the graphite electrode and the advanced graphite materials businesses.

Mr. Batty has been GrafTech’s Vice President of Corporate R&D since 1999. In this role, he led the development of many of the company’s innovations in recent years. He holds an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from Imperial College (London, England) and an MBA from Sheffield Hallam University (Sheffield, England).

Stepping into Mr. Batty’s previous role is 14-year GrafTech R&D veteran Julian Norley. As the Vice President of Corporate R&D, he is tasked with directing GrafTech’s global R&D organization. Previously Dr. Norley served as Senior Corporate Fellow.

Dr. Tracy Albers has been promoted to the position of External Interactions Manager for the Research & Development group. Her GrafTech knowledge, deep science background and personal skills are needed to represent us well at all levels in our local, state, national, media, political and educational partners.

Senator Brown visits Lakewood site

 In January, U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown visited GrafTech
International’s Lakewood, Ohio facility to highlight a new law that provides tax credits to companies that hire unemployed veterans.
The Senator was joined by GrafTech Chairman & CEO Craig Shular,
who explained to local media and a number of Lakewood team
members how those with military experience benefit the company, which currently employs a total of 42 veterans at its two Northeast Ohio locations.

spoke with two GrafTech team members who are veterans.Becky Kemp from the Manufacturing Advocacy and Growth Network (MAGNET) also spoke briefly about MAGNET’s recently-launched initiative to match returning veterans with training for available manufacturing jobs in Northeast Ohio.

GrafTech attends Energy Enterprise Cluster Roundtable with U.S. Secretary of Energy Dr. Steven Chu

Also in January, GrafTech participated in NorTech’s invitation-only roundtable with Energy Secretary Chu, which was held on the campus of Case Western Reserve University. Roughly 20 companies attended this event to highlight issues facing advanced energy manufacturing and energy policy in the United States.

GrafTech International part of consortium to support Airbus technology needs

Ohio companies and organizations collectively have significant experience in the aerospace industry. A collaborative program funded by Airbus through the National Composites Center (NCC) in Kettering, Ohio, aims to take advantage of this experience. The collaboration will address Airbus’ technology needs and endeavor to enhance the existing Ohio-based supply chain for the aerospace industry worldwide.

A total of six Ohio companies (including GrafTech) are included in the program, which comprises four work packages directed by Airbus.

                                On January 20, Drs. Albers (at far left) and Norley (far right) attended a kickoff event for the program at NCC’s offices. Theyare pictured with NCC President Lisa Novelli and Airbus America Chairman Allan McArtor.The Ohio Department of Development, the Dayton Development Coalition, EWI and the Ohio Aerospace Institute (OAI), were among the organizations that attended the media event following a private conference call with Airbus, NCC and the participating Ohio companies.
